FAQ

Is there a difference between the American Board of Plastic Surgery and other cosmetic surgery boards?

Absolutely. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only board recognized in the United States by the American Board of Medical Specialties. It is the only board that will assure you that your surgeon has been trained through an accredited plastic and reconstructive training program, and had passed written and oral exams that test their knowledge, skill and ethics.

Is Dr. Rubis board certified?

Yes, he is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Where is my surgery performed at, and who does my anesthesia?

Dr. Rubis only operates at hospitals, or fully accredited surgery center facilities that are staffed with anesthesiologists. We feel that is very important for your safety.

How long will my tummy tuck last?

As long as your weight is maintained, your tummy tuck should last forever. Large fluctuations in weight or pregnancy can reverse the results of your tummy tuck, so it is ideal to wait until you are done having children.

Will my insurance cover my breast surgery and tummy tuck?

In some cases, insurance will cover breast surgeries such as breast reduction or breast reconstruction. Certain criteria must be met to qualify for coverage, and Dr. Rubis will discuss this with you during your consultation. Insurances typically do not cover tummy tuck procedures, since it is purely a cosmetic procedure and is not a medical necessity. They sometimes will cover the removal of a panniculectomy, or removal of an apron of skin on the abdomen. Again, certain criteria must be met to qualify.

Can I go home the same day of my procedure?

Most procedures are outpatient, allowing you to go home the same day. Some of our more involved surgeries such as tummy tucks, multiple areas of liposuction, or combined surgeries do include an overnight stay in the surgery center with a private nurse. This enables us to monitor you closely and provide excellent pain control.

Will my breast implants have a warranty?

Yes, the implant manufacturer’s provide a lifetime warranty for your implants for a ruptured implant. If you ever have a rupture or deflation of your implant, the implant manufacturer will provide you with a new implant for life. If you have a rupture in the first 10 years, they will also pay up to $1200-$2400 towards your surgery costs. Detailed warranty information will be provided to you at your consultation.

Can I have a tummy tuck and breast surgery at the same time?

In most cases, these procedures can be combined, allowing for less costs and a single recovery. During your consultation, Dr. Rubis will determine with you, if you are a good candidate for a combined surgery. Obviously, the health and safety of our patients is the most important factor when deciding on combined procedures, but the “mommy makeover” is the most popular surgery we perform.

Should I lose weight before surgery?

In many cases, weight loss is not required, but always recommended. Ideally, the closer you are to your goal weight, the better the results Dr. Rubis can provide. Breast surgery turns out better, tummy tucks are tighter, liposuction is better defined, and overall undergoing general anesthesia is safer if you are not significantly overweight.

Do I have to stop smoking?

It is always in your best interest to quit before any surgery. However, we do not require patients to quit for all procedures. Some surgeries we do require patients to quit and be nicotine free for at least 2 months before surgery. Breast reduction and tummy tuck procedures are the most common procedures you have to quit smoking for. The reason is the effect of nicotine on the blood vessels that cause spasticity leading to poor blood supply required to heal your incisions. If you do not have good blood supply, areas of skin can die leading to large wounds. Your primary care physician can help you with quitting.

Is there anything I can do for stretch marks?

Unfortunately, stretch marks are permanent scars through the skin layers. They are caused by fluctuations in weight and sometimes genetics. There are not any treatments currently available to remove stretch marks or improve the look permanently. If your stretch marks are located on you abdomen, they can be surgically removed with a tummy tuck.
